Happy International Mermaid Day!

Celebrating mermaids in March in the Northeast is extra special to me. Although it’s technically Spring, we’re having a weekend of rain, snow, and sleet. Not a time I would usually think of mermaids! But that’s what I love about imagination…we can pretend to be swimming through blue-green ocean waves, tails flipping and twisting, playing with sea friends no matter what the weather or time of year.

To celebrate International Mermaid Day, I’m sharing some of my favorite mermaid picture books full of imagination, creativity, adventure, friendship, family, and resourcefulness. Peruse through the book carousel and click on each image for more information. There are many more mermaid children’s books out there and I’m happy to recommend more if you wish. Just let me know in the comments or email me at booksbutterfliesandbeing@gmail.com. I’d love to hear about mermaid books you love, too!

*Please note - I’m finding that commenters are not receiving email notifications when I’ve commented back on something they wrote. I’ve also noticed and received feedback that commenters are not able to “like/heart” a comment. I’ve been told by Squarespace that these issues are being worked on. Thank you for your patience and understanding with these things! It’s not as convenient, but you can always peek back at the comments to see if there has been any new activity, especially on your own comments. You can also communicate through email at booksbutterfliesandbeing@gmail.com.

My next mermaid read!

Just look at this cuteness! I have yet to read the board book, You Are My Sparkly Mermaid, written and illustrated by author-illustrator, Joyce Wan. I love all the picture and board books of hers that I’ve read so far and I’m looking forward to getting my hands on this one! Have you read it?

Bonus: Fantasy Map Activity!

Author-illustrator, Elly MacKay, has created a cool activity to go along with I Am A Meadow Mermaid. Check it out here! Just scroll down the page a little bit to find out how to map your own imaginary world! (Image of map from theaterclouds.com)
